What is the Pomodoro technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a kitchen timer to break work into intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for tomato.

How to use the Pomodoro timer

  1. Decide on the task to be done
  2. Start the Pomodoro timer (defaults to 25 minutes)
  3. Work on the task
  4. Take a short break (defaults to 5 minutes)
  5. You will go back to step 2 and repeat until four pomodoros have been completed
  6. After four pomodoros are done, you will take a long break (defaults to 20 minutes)
  7. Once the long break is finished, you will return to step 2
